The Federal Trade Commission is demanding more details from Microsoft and other major players about the Windows 10 trial program, saying the new operating system is “extremely vulnerable” to a malicious actor who could cause millions of devices to be compromised.
The FTC, which launched its investigation into the Windows Insider program in January, said Microsoft has not provided the information requested in its complaint to date.
“This vulnerability poses serious risks to the security of the entire ecosystem of Windows devices,” FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez said in a statement Wednesday.
“This is not the kind of software or hardware we expect to rely on for our everyday computing needs.”
The FTC is asking Microsoft to provide more details about how it manages the Windows 7, 8, and 10 Insider program.
Microsoft has yet to respond.
Microsoft is one of several major U.S. companies that have been targeted by hackers.
A group of Chinese hackers recently stole more than 4.5 million credentials from the company’s security software, including passwords for hundreds of thousands of employees.
In June, a hacker known as the Shadow Brokers said it had stolen about 4 million Windows Insider credentials from Microsoft.
Microsoft said in its latest blog post that it has “actively worked with the FBI to help us secure our customers data.”
The Windows Insider Program is a program that lets companies test new versions of Windows and devices that are not already running Windows, with the goal of improving security.
It has been available to companies such as Google and Apple for some time.
Microsoft began offering the program last summer, offering customers free Windows Insider licenses to test new software on their devices.
Microsoft has since changed the terms of its program, including limiting the number of devices allowed to run the new software and requiring the devices to have an internet connection.
The company said Wednesday that it was also expanding its Windows Insider testing program to include “more than 5 million devices,” and it is testing its new operating systems and the new Xbox One console.
